Frequently Asked Questions
Before the mobility
There are three different ways to go abroad: Erasmus+, Non-Erasmus, and Free mover.
Erasmus+: You may attend classes and take examinations at the KLU´s partner universities affiliated with the European Union “Erasmus+ mobility” program which includes most (not all!) of our European partner universities. Each student receives a monthly grant and is required by the EU to do some specific paperwork such as an online linguistic assessment and online report. You can learn more about the program on our Erasmus+ Moodle page.
Non-Erasmus: While you remain a matriculated student at KLU, you may also spend a semester studying at a university outside of Europe linked to KLU through a bilateral partnership agreement. For some of the non-EU partners, different funding options are available.
Free Mover: Where no agreement is in place, you may seek information about a university of your choice and contact it directly. Remember to inform KLU´s International Office about each step you take and respect the specific KLU deadlines that apply. In addition to the KLU tuition fee you also pay the host universities tuition fee.
Master students should check their Admissions Kit on page 3 to see, if there is a paragraph about the semester abroad.
Over the years, we have established a broad network of partner universities around the world at which you can spend your semester abroad. You can find a list of all our current partner universities and detailed information about requirements and the universities in general, on our Moodle page.
If there is no partner university at your preferred destination, e.g. Australia, you can go abroad as a so-called free mover.
Bachelor: The Semester abroad will take place in your fourth semester.
Master: The Semester abroad will take place in your third semester.
Please speak to the Careers Team as well as the partner university to see whether
a) your arrival at the host university can be postponed
b) an exception can be made in terms of your internship duration
All our agreements are based on a balanced exchange rate which we try
and have to obtain. Asking for more places when the rate is already unbalanced
would not be sufficient.
The International Office will make the allocation based on GPA, motivation and requirements at the partner university.
The results will be communicated in individual emails.
Please keep in mind that due to the limited availability of spots, it may happen that you do not get your first but your second or third choice.
If there is no partner university at your preferred destination, e.g. Australia, you can go abroad as a so-called free mover.
They are on Mobility Online. Please set the right filter. If you can't see them (= "0" output, try to refresh the page or choose another browser).
While spending your semester abroad at one of our partner universities there are no additional tuition fees* to be paid at the partner university. Nevertheless, please keep in mind that you may be asked to pay administrative fees which must be covered by you.
*tuition fees have to be paid at OSU (USA)
Please check the website of the partner university and the fact sheet, if available.

As the visa processes and requirements differ immensely from one country to another and we are not working together with any embassy, you must take care of the visa process yourself. However, we will provide you with a letter stating that you will spend your semester abroad at a partner university that will be useful for the visa process.
