Places to relax in Hamburg

Planten un Blomen – park in the center of Hamburg. Relax under mediterranean fig trees or at the Japanese teahouse! You will find an ice-skating rink during winter and a game of miniature golf and the famous “Wasserlichtspiele” – a combination of illuminated fountains and classical music during summer.

Alster - the inner and outer Alster Lakes are a central part of Hamburg city life. Sail, paddle or row on the Alster - or just relax in the shade of the trees.

Aside from our KLU library and (a lot of) other scientific libraries in Hamburg, there are public libraries for your leisure time. There is one in almost every neighborhood. They do not offer books only, but also a wide range of journals, events and more!

Destinations for a day trip

Elbstrand - stroll along the beautiful sand beaches of the Elbe. Tipp: use the ferry from Landungsbrücken to Neumühlen / Övelgönne to get there. (included in your transportation ticket!)

Lüneburg -visit the historic city with its medieval architecture to get a glance of Germanys past. (included in your transportation ticket!)

Altes Land - the area is well known for its magnificent orchards. Tipp: the bloom of the orchards (april to mai) offers a beautiful photo scene.

Bremen - explore the beautiful historic buildings in this hanseatic city and travel hundreds of years back in time when walking through the small alleys of the Schnoor Quarter.

Schwerin – explore Schwerins’ fairytale castle! Schwerin also offers a splendid landscape with 12 lakes, parks and gardens.

Baltic Sea

  • Lübeck – go and visit the historic hanseatic, which belongs to the UNESCO world heritage, and try some world famous Lübecker Marzipan
  • Timmendorfer Beach – long sandy beach and tasty fish restaurants along the boardwalk

North Sea

  • Cuxhaven – learn about the unique mudflat and try out a guided walking tour to the nearest island Neuwerk
  • Sankt Peter Ording – watch the best kitesurfers during the Kitesurf Masters in August or try some surfing yourself!

How about a stroll in the neighborhood?

- Isemarkt - visit one of the most beautiful and popular street markets of Germany in Eppendorf (Tue & Fr: 8.30 am – 2 pm)

- Fischmarkt - located just a stone’s throw away from the Reeperbahn, the fish market is must-see. The traditional barkers will sell you everything: from fish, fruits and flowers to souvenirs and clothing. (Sun 5 am - 9.30 am)

- Planetarium - lean back and relax as you watch the starry night sky, far away galaxies and planets.

Hafengeburtstag – in May, the whole city celebrates the birthday of our harbor with concerts and food stands

Dom - go and check out the biggest funfair in North Germany which takes place in St. Pauli three times a year.

Must see Neighbourhoods in Hamburg

Treppenviertel Blankenese ­ - escape the big city by visiting Blankenese's narrow winding alleys, beautiful captains' homes, mansions, and river views.

Ottensen - major shopping district. Its narrow alleys and little bars and cafes have earned it the nickname 'Little Paris'.

St. Pauli – here you will find the famous Reeperbahn with many clubs, bars, theatres, musicals and live music. Moreover the narrow streets of the Karolinenviertel offer many small boutiques and cafés for your shopping pleasure.

Schanzenviertel - Schanzenviertel hosts boutiques, bars, restaurants and cafés with a cool alternative atmosphere by night.

St. Georg - a lively and colourful neighbourhood filled with galleries, shops, restaurants and bars.

Wilhelmsburg - young, lively and multicultural ― experience Wilhelmsburg, Hamburg’s very own Williamsburg. Tipp: Join a game of the Hamburg Towers, a newly-established second division professional basketball team brings high-flying dunks to the Inselparkhalle arena, in the heart of Wilhelmsburg.

Bergedorf - for nature lovers, there’s a lot to like about Bergedorf district. It is home to Hamburg’s largest nature preserve, Kirchwerder Wiesen, as well as many smaller green oases. An especially popular day-trip destination is Boberger Düne: Hamburg’s only sand dunes.
