Welcome Week 2024
4. Participation, dress code & more
Participation in the Welcome Week
Attending Welcome Week is a compulsory first step into your life as a student at KLU.
It is the university's way of warmly welcoming you and making sure you are provided with all necessary study related information, so that a smooth and pleasant start to your university journey can be guaranteed.
Not only will your participation help you get acquainted with the university and provide you with important information to navigate yourself through your student career right away, it is also a good way to get to know your fellow class mates, the faculty & staff and make new contacts. Furthermore, you will receive all necessary documents for your studies at KLU, such as the transportation ticket and your student ID card.
Students who attend the Welcome Week are usually more confident when they start classes because they have had time to meet friends, get to know the campus and get settled. KLU’s Welcome Week introduces and builds upon various communities within the KLU family. Moreover, you will be enrolled in classes that require your presence Welcome Week activities (e.g. Introduction Library, IT Info Session).
In case you are prevented from attending you have to request an exemption in advance.

You'll need formal as well as informal clothes for your studies at KLU. A normal lecture day at KLU is casual, some events are business casual, others like the graduation ceremony are business formal. As an additional benefit students at KLU will receive a ticket for public transportation within the metropolitan area of Hamburg. The transportation ticket is an extra service of KLU, which is not covered by the tuition fee. KLU students receive the transportation ticket at no cost - the additional value is about € 200 per year.

This includes use of the Metro-Bus, Subway (U-Bahn) / Rapid train (S-Bahn) and the regional trains (2nd class). Please note that fast trains (IC / ICE) are excluded, with some exceptions. All extracurricular events can be found in the Campus Calendar in Outlook. The campus calendar was created to provide a broad overview of all academic and non-academic dates to the whole KLU community.
With the campus calendar you will be able to check for
- semester dates (lecture periods, exam weeks, semester break,…)
- academic deadlines (registration deadline for your semester abroad, submission deadline for your thesis,…)
- campus events (lecture series, events organized by the student clubs, yearly events such as the Graduation Ceremony, Start-Up Day, Open Days,…)
We would like to encourage you to regularly check the Campus Calendar in order to make the best of your KLU experience. KLU offers quite a number of events during the year, be it teaching related or extracurricular. These events are great opportunities to network, broaden one’s mind and bring the KLU community closer together. The calendar is supposed to help you not to miss out on these dates and of course to facilitate organizing and structuring your studies successfully.
(Please note that you will not be able to see your schedule in the Campus Calendar. Kindly continue using your lecture calendar for this purpose.)
Once on campus you will receive an email from campus.calendar@klu.org offering to share a calendar with you. Of course our IT Team will help you with the implementation of the campus calendar during the IT session in the Welcome Week.
